English VS Indonesian Poetry

1. In my opinion, poetry is a work of art that is expressed in writing or can be conveyed directly orally. Poetry is an expression of feelings conveyed by literature.

2. There are three kinds or genres of Poetry in English:

    - Narrative, is a poem that tell the story.

       eg: The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver By Edna ST. Vincent Millay 

             "Son," said my mother,

              When I was knee-high,

              "You've need of clothes to cover you,

               And not a rag have I.

              ...

  - Dramatic, is a poem where the speaker is someone within the poetry.

      eg: Meeting at Night By Robert Browning 

             The gray sea and the long black land;

             And the yellow half-moon large and low;

            And the startled little waves that leap

            In fiery ringlets from their sleep,

            As I gain the cove with pushing prow,

            And quench its speed i 'the slushy sand.

            ...

  - Lyrical, is poetry that express the emotions or feeling which set up in lyric.

     eg: Winter By William Shakespeare

            When icicles hang by the wall,

            And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,

            And Tom bears logs into the hall,

            And milk comes frozen home in pail,

            When blood is nippd and ways be foul,

            Then nightly sings the staring owl,

            ...

3. Indonesian has three kinds or genres of Poetry :

    - Narrative, this poetry tells a story or explanation. 

        Eg : The Ballad of Beloved People By WS Rendra

                He lies in the old garden

                revolver in his hand and the hole in his forehead

                They met him without sorrow

                and the wind smells of copper rust.

                ....

    

    - Lyrics Poetry, this type of poetry is divided into several types; Elegies, Ode, and Serenade.

        Elegi is a poem that expresses feelings of sorrow. For example Elegi Jakarta by Asrul Sani.

        Serenada is a song of love that can be sung. Rendra has created many serenada in the Four Poetry             Collections. For example, "Black Serenada", "Blue Serenada", "Pink Serenada", "Purple                         Serenada", "Gray Serenada", and so on.

        Ode is a poem that contains worship of someone, something, or something, for example Teratai, by             Sanusi Pane.

    - Descriptive Poetry, in this poem, the poet acts as an impressionist on circumstances / events,                   objects, or situations that are seen to attract his attention.

       Poetry which is included in the descriptive poetry type, for example satire and poetry that is social        criticism.
